Obituary of Andrew G. Currie

Andrew G. Currie, 94, of 144 Greenhurst Village Drive, died at 10:54 a.m. Saturday (August 29, 2009) at Tanglewood Manor in Jamestown. He was the husband of the late Doris Himelein Currie, whom he married February 14, 1944 and who died this past January 22, 2009. An area resident for the past 25 years, he was born in Erie, Pa. on November 21, 1914, the son of the late James and Jessie Smith Currie. He was a graduate of Jamestown High School where he was a founding member of the Braw Caddie Clan. He earned his bachelor's degree from Fredonia Teachers College and his master's degree in music from Ithaca College. He was also a World War II US Army veteran. Prior to retirement, Andy served as instrumental music teacher for the Richfield Springs Central School in Richfield, NY where he had been employed for over 32 years. He attended St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Jamestown and while living in Richfield Springs attended St. John's Episcopal Church. While in Venice, Florida, where he and his wife wintered for many years, he attended the local Episcopal church. Before retirement, Andy and his family spent almost 20 years during the summer traveling around the country with their travel trailer. They traveled extensively throughout the 50 United States. Andy and Doris also traveled throughout Europe. They both enjoyed their winter months after retirement in Venice, Florida. While in Florida, Andy played violin in the Venice Community Orchestra and following his return to Jamestown, played with the Jamestown Area Community Orchestra. During the long winter months while still living in Richfield Springs, Andy enjoyed cross country skiing with his children, taking walks, ice skating on the local pond and practicing his violin. Surviving are two daughters, Sandra L. Brogan of Reston, VA and Sue Currie Tarplee of Greenwood, IN, and a son, Drew G. Currie of Denver, CO; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and a brother, James Currie of Jamestown. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2009 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Eric M. Williams, rector, will officiate. Inurnment will be in the St. Luke's Church Columbarium. The family will receive friends following the service, Saturday the 12th, in the undercroft of the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jamestown Area Community Orchestra, c/o First Covenant Church, 520 Spring St., Jamestown, NY 14701; or St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 410 North Main St., Jamestown, NY 14701.
