Obituary of Dennis P Ewing

Dennis P. Ewing, Sr., 68, of 1708 Woodhill Lane, Bedford, TX, formerly of Jamestown and Lakewood, NY, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2015, in the Arlington Villa Home, Arlington, TX, surrounded by his family following a lengthy illness. He was born November 6, 1946 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late DeForest D. and Margaret A. "Peg" Terry Ewing Sr. Before his retirement he had worked for many years at Dawson Metal Company, Inc. Dennis was a long time volunteer for Babe Ruth Baseball, both on the local and state level for 42 years. He started out coaching in the Jamestown Babe Ruth League in 1965 and became a manager in 1966. He served as Secretary for the Jamestown Babe Ruth League for several years and became President of the league in 1978. Always wanting to do more for the kids and Babe Ruth Baseball, he became an assistant to Ray Angle at the state level and later became New York State Commissioner for District 5 in 1977 and also was an assistant to the State Commissioner for Upstate New York in 1984. He became the Upstate New York Commissioner in 1985. After a few years, Dennis suggested that New York State be divided in half because of so many different leagues playing. Due to his hard work and due diligence, his request was passed by Babe Ruth Headquarters. Dennis was elected the New York State Commissioner after this and he held that position until he retired in 2007, due to his illness. In 1980, Dennis served as the first Vice President for the 13 year old World Series held in Jamestown and served the same in 1981 and was active during the 1984 World Series. Dennis was active in many ways with Babe Ruth Baseball throughout his life and made many friends along the way through his many trips to baseball tournaments. To put it mildly, he loved his baseball. Dennis was very active in the Jamestown community where he received several awards including the first Joseph Mason Award in 1978, the Ray Angle Award in 1979 and the Shrinner's Service to youth Award in 2002. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Brenda L. Simpson Ewing, two sons, Dennis P. (Julie) Ewing, Jr., Scott A.
