Obituary of Virginia R. Cummings

Virginia Ruth Landers Cummings, 90, of Maple Springs, passed away peacefully Thursday morning at W.C.A. Hospital, with family by her side. Virginia was born on June 15, 1925 in Bradford, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Derrick City, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Bradford High School in 1944. She earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from Lake Erie College in 1948, where she made life-long friends. Following college, Virginia returned home to assist her father and brother with the family oil business, and to care for her father. As a girl, the Landers family vacationed at Chautauqua Lake; they moved to Maple Springs permanently in 1953 where Virginia lived the rest of her life. On her birthday in 1965, Virginia married James Cummings whom she had known for years in Derrick City. Virginia and James were happily married for 41 years, and had one son, David James Cummings. Virginia's faith was strong. She was actively involved in the Maple Springs Union Church, and a member of the Bradford United Methodist Church and the Bemus Point United Methodist Church. Virginia was a kind, generous, and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. Naturally, she served as a caregiver for relatives and neighbors. Virginia pursued her own passion for reading, walking, playing the piano, gardening, sewing and knitting, while encouraging the passions of her family and friends. Virginia's love for her family and friends was immeasurable. Her humor, wisdom, and support touched many lives deeply. Virginia loved Chautauqua Lake in all of it's seasons. While she travelled widely throughout the United States and Canada, Chautauqua Lake was always where Virginia's heart resided. Virginia's grandchildren brought a special sparkle to her eye. She was especially thankful for the friendship and help of Wanda Cady, John Michael, and Yvonne Wonderling, all of whom were family to her. Virginia is survived by her son, David James (Julie Simpson) Cummings, and grandchild Katherine Grace Simpson Cummings, and twin grandchildren, Isabelle Rose Simpson Cummings and Bradford Clark Simpson Cummings, all of Moscow, Idaho. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Orr Landers and Ruth Mortland Landers; infant twin brothers, Howard and Harold Landers; a sister, Isabelle Jean Landers; and brothers, David Edgar Landers, Robert Blaine Landers, and Richard Orrin Landers. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. Friends will be received from 1-1:30 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Rev. Violet Davidson will officiate. Burial will be at the Bemus Point Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Bemus Point Public Library, Children's Section, 13 Main Street, P.O. Box 428, Bemus Point, NY 14712 or to the Maple Springs Volunteer Fire Department, 5385 Maple Springs-Ellery Rd, Maple Springs, NY 14756. You may leave words of condolence at www.lindfuneralhome.com.
