Obituary of John J. Walsh

John Jerome "Jack" Walsh, 94, formerly of Old Fluvanna Road, Jamestown, passed away Saturday February 6, 2016, in Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing. He was born July 29, 1921, in Jamestown, a son of the late Thomas and Carrie Sigular Walsh. John served in the US Army, 82nd Airborne Division, 505th Parachute Regiment Company C from 1942-45. He saw action in Normandy, Sicily and fought in the whole Middle Eastern Front. He was awarded a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal among many others. He loved his country and family. He was a hero on and off the battlefield. He married his wife Betty Cook Walsh on January 5, 1947 in St. Lukes Episcopal Church. She preceded in death May 28, 2014. Jack and Betty enjoyed fellowship at War Vets Recreation. he was also a member of the American Legion and VFW. Jack and his wife enjoyed playing cards and many trips to Las Vegas, Wheeling West Virginia and casinos. At home, he enjoyed outdoor work, planting gardens and doing puzzles with his wife. he was an avid bowler and fan of the Buffalo Bills. He especially enjoyed the visits of his grandchildren who were his pride and joy. Jack was employed as a truck driver by Furniture Express, Rapid Delivery and Consolidated Freightways. In earlier years he was a commercial tile layer. Surviving are a grandson Gerald A. (Teresa) Haglund, Jr. of Louisville, KY; three great grandchildren Kristina and Joseph Haglund and Ashley Baker; two great great grandchildren Serenity and Alexander Baker all of Louisville, KY and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and his wife Jack was preceded in death by a son Edward J. Walsh in 1958; a daughter Joan Walsh Haglund in 1985; four brothers Tom, Bill, George and Frank Walsh and a sister Elaine Ernewein. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. Rev. Gerald A. Haglund, Sr., Heritage Ministries chaplain will officiate. Military honors will be conducted as part of the funeral service. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service Wednesday in the funeral home.
