Obituary of Raymond J. Ross

Raymond J. Ross, 96, of Jamestown, passed away at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2016, in the W.C.A. Hospital. An area resident for most of his life, he was born January 13, 1920 in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late Raymond J. and Anna C. Walters Ross, Sr. Ray was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the 7th Armored Division, Company C, 77th Armored Medical Battalion from February 9, 1942 to October 7, 1945 during World War II, in the Battle of the Bulge. During his tour of duty he received the Purple Heart, the Medal of Verdun , the Normandy Invasion Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Invasion of Normandy Medal and the New York State Meritorious Medal. He was also a strong supporter of the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. Prior to his retirement in 1986, he was employed as a press operator for the Adanlock-Jamestown Corporation where he worked for 27 years. In earlier years he had worked for the former Art Metal Incorporated for 13 years. He was a life member of the John W. Tiffany Post 53 Veteran of Foreign Wars, a life member of the Samuel Derby Post 556, American Legion Frewsburg, NY and a former member of the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. He was also a proud life member of the Seventh Armored Division Association for many years. Surviving is a daughter, Debra F. (Gary) Kinnis of Jamestown, a granddaughter, Kris (Bradley) Stimson of Falconer, NY, two great grandsons, Nathan and Ryan Stimson and two sisters, Roberta Jane Burton of North Syracuse, NY, Katherine A. "Kay" Smith of Middleburg, OH. He is also survived by his long time companion, his dog "Buddy", who was always by his side. He was preceded in death by his wife the former Farolene M. "Fair" Seekins Ross whom he married October 9, 1946 and who died February 27, 2002. The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Timothy Phelps, chaplain of Chautauqua County Hospice and Palliative Care will officiate. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Falconer United Methodist Church, 201 North Work St. Falconer, NY 14733 or to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Rd. Jamestown, NY 14701.
