Obituary of Dolores C. Nelson

Dolores "Dee" Christine Nelson, aged 86, recently a resident of Heritage Green Rehabilitation Center, previously of 402 Park Street, Jamestown, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. She was born in New York City on New Year's Day 1931 to Charles and Ella (Suarez) Guarneri, their only child. Dee graduated from William Bryant High School in 1948. She went on to study chemistry and applied mathematics at Purdue University. After graduating in 1952, Dee worked for General Electric in Schenectady, NY. Employed as an engineering assistant on the development of the engines for the US Navy nuclear sub-marine fleet, she was one of the first people in the country to have worked as a computer programmer. An invitation to the launch of the Sea Wolf was a cherished memento of her role in this great technical achievement. In 1956 Dee married John Edwin Nelson of Jamestown NY, whom she had met at Purdue. They moved to Louisville, KY where their son Robert was born in 1959. In 1960 the family moved to Jamestown. They built the house at Park Street, moving in shortly after the birth of their daughter Kathy in 1961.Many active years followed, as Dee raised her children, supported her husband's business, attended First Covenant Church, and played bridge. She liked detective stories and cross word puzzles and watching the Mets games. After her children had grown, she worked for a few years as a sales assistant at the Bon Ton in Warren, PA. John and Dee enjoyed travelling, going regularly to Florida and England to visit friends and family. Her last years of life were restricted by health problems but she retained her sense of humor, her interest in her family and in baseball. The family are grateful to those who looked after her and took the time to visit her. Dolores is survived by her son Robert (Mary Kalski) of Randallstown, MD, daughter Kathryn (James Henshaw) and granddaughters Helen and Jane, all of Reading, England, and a cousin Andrea (Jon) Segerdahl of Garden City, NY. Also, her sisters-in-law, Kathryn Kotsi, Louis Nelson (David) Rhodes, and Maxine Nelson, all of Jamestown, her nephew Tom (Debbie) Nelson of Busti, NY, their children Emily and Kristine,and niece Mary (Bill) Bouck of Toledo, OH and their daughter Jennifer. She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Nelson who passed away on October 7, 2015. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. Friends will be received from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Inurnment will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
