Obituary of Gerard A. Achterberg

Gerard A. "Jerry" Achterberg, 70, of 3081 West Oak Hill Rd. Jamestown, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2017, in UPMC Chautauqua W.C.A. Hospital. He was born September 4, 1946 in Binghamton, NY a son of the late Gerard A. and Edna Paula Titscher Achterberg. Jerry was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from July 27, 1966 and was discharged from the U.S. Naval Reserves on December 9, 1970. During his tour of duty he served on the USS Wrangell. He was a graduate of the Broome Community College where he earned his associates degree. Jerry was known to friends and family as being loyal, trustworthy and honest. He began a distinguished career in the food service industry when he accepted a position as a sales representative for the Frosted Food Supply Company in 1974, in Hosreheads, NY. His natural talent and tireless work ethic propelled him to the position of District Account Manager and eventually Vice President and Director of Sales for all of Central New York and the southern tier with the Sysco Corporation. He will be forever remembered by his three sons as a true friend and roll model. Whether in school, sports or life, Dad was always there for us and for that we will be eternally grateful. Surviving are his three sons, Brian A. (Kimberly A. ) Achterberg of Jamestown, NY, Jason A. (Jennifer A.) Achterberg of Pine Valley, NY, Steven E. (Stepahny L.) Achterberg of Corning, NY, six grandchildren, Braxton Achterberg of Lakewood, NY, Brittany Snyder, Rebecca Snyder both of Horseheads, NY, Jacob Achterberg of Pine Valley, NY, Madison Updyke, Ryan Updyke both of Corning, NY, and his two sisters, Connie Albert of Hot Springs, AK, Christine Austin of Afton, NY. He was preceded in death by his wife the former Janet M. Wilson Achterberg whom he married August 9, 1969 in Buffalo, NY and who died January 31, 2003. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2017 in the Lind Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chautauqua County Office of the Aging, c/o Francis G. "Mac" McCoy Fund, Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, 418 Spring St. Jamestown, NY 14701 or to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Rd. Jamestown, NY 14701.
