Obituary of Lawrence E. "Larry" Barry

Lawrence E. "Larry" Barry, 90, formerly of Donelson Rd., Jamestown and Lakewood, NY, passed away at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2017, in the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center. A Jamestown area resident since 1954, he was born March 28, 1926 in Bradford, PA, a son of the late Frank J. and Eulalia Gentner Barry. Larry was a 1944 graduate and valedictorian of St. Bernard Parochial School in Bradford, Pa and was a 1951 graduate of St. Bonaventure University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from October 19, 1944 to August 11, 1946 as a technician fourth grade in the Headquarters Detachment, Station Complement. During his tour of duty he received the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Prior to his retirement, he was the branch manager for the Jamestown and Lakewood offices of General Motors Acceptance Corporation where he worked from 1952 to 1993. Following retirement he worked with his son as a surveyor technician for Daniel L. Barry Licensed Land Surveyor. In later years he had worked as a driver for Ed Shults Auto Group for several years. He was a former longstanding communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lakewood, NY and also a life member of the Lakewood Memorial Post 1286, American Legion and the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. He was an avid sportsman having pitched in the GMAC branch offices fast pitch softball tournaments and also participated in several bowling leagues. He was very fond of dogs, especially his pet newfoundlands. He loved his 23 years living on the lake where he enjoyed spending time on his boat and taking care of his home riding on his lawnmower. He also enjoyed hunting, playing horseshoes, spending time on the beach, camping and country living. Surviving is a son, Daniel L. (Kris Wadsworth) Barry of Randolph, NY, two daughters, Kathleen M. (Robert) Frucella of Jamestown, Maureen E. (John) Richerson of Hiram, GA, 8 grandchildren, Meagan (Marcus) Weidner of Willowick, OH, Shawn Barry of Mechanicsburg, PA, Kevin (Andrea Villarino) Barry of Phoenix, AZ, Stephen (Bonnie) Frucella of Killeen, TX, Kristina (Gloveis) Wells of Seabeck, WA, Nathan Wells of Palm Beach, FL, Cory Richerson, Fallon Richerson both of Hiram, GA and 3 great grandchildren, Elliana Barry, Caden Wilson, Dwight Wells. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife the former Beverly M. McMinn Barry whom he married November 15, 1952 and who died March 29, 1996, a daughter, Mary Barry Wilson who died July 29, 2015, a granddaughter, Stephanie A. Frucella who died February 4, 2008 and two brothers, Francis J. Barry and Eugene C. Barry. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in St. James Catholic Church. The Rev. Darrell G. Duffy, pastor will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be led at 6:45 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
