Obituary of Gerald C. Bondi

Gerald C. Bondi, 90, of 140 Aldren Ave. formerly of Campbell Ave. Jamestown, passed away at 10:12 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2017, in the Lutheran Retirement Home. A lifelong area resident, he was born December 12, 1926 in Falconer, NY a son of the late Joseph and Rosa Maria Donato Bondi. He was a 1945 graduate of Falconer High School and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force serving from April 25, 1946 to May 27, 1947 during World War II with the 37th Statistical Control Unit. Before his retirement he was employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Jamestown for 30 years. In earlier years he worked for his brother's business, Sam Bondi Wholesale Foods. He was an active communicant of Holy Apostles Parish at St John Catholic Church where he was a member of the Holy Name Society, St. Vincent DePaul Society and served as an altar server for many years. He was also a past Secretary-Treasurer for the Mt. Olivet Cemetery Association and was a former Vice President for the Italian American Brotherhood Club. His other memberships include, the International Association of Letter Carriers, the Henry Mosher Post 638 American Legion, Falconer, the John W. Tiffany Post 53, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Knights of Columbus, the War Vets Recreation Club, the Jamestown Coin Club and the American Association of Retired Persons. Surviving are his wife, Aurora Grassi Bondi whom he married September 4, 1950, two daughters, Mary Kathryn (Charles) Chester of Laurel, MD, Deborah (John) Bondi-Ellison of Fayetteville, NY, five grandchildren, Kevin (Erin) Chester of Columbia, MD, Robert Chester of Laurel, MD, Matthew (Erica) Ellison of Frankford, DE, Michael Ellison of Laurel, MD, Kathryn (Wesley) Huntemann of Columbia, MD, three great grandchildren, Anthony Chester, Vincent Chester and Patrick Huntemann all of Columbia, MD. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Vincent, Anthony, Samuel and Joseph Bondi, three sisters, Bessie Elardo, Sally Scarry, Bebe Chiazze and a granddaughter, Catherine Ann Marie Ellison. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday in Holy Apostles Parish at St. John Catholic Church. The Rev. Dennis W. Mende, pastor will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2-6 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be led at 1:45 p.m. Sunday.
