Obituary of Barbara Mattison
Barbara P. Mattison, 81, of 9 Gifford Ave., Lakewood, NY, formerly of Maine, NY, passed away at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, September 6, 2017, in her home, with her faithful dog Newman and her daughters by her side.
She was born January 2, 1936 in Scranton, PA, a daughter of the late Gordon and Ethel Faust Puls.
Barb worked as a lifeguard at Lakewood Beach where she met her late husband Jerry. Barb moved with Jerry to Maine, NY, where they lived for 50 years on property in the country. They enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their annual pig roast and many outdoor brunches at "The Creek".
For many years Barb owned and operated Mattison Pottery in Maine, NY, retiring in 2004. She enjoyed her career as a potter where she won several awards at shows across the North Eastern United States.
In 2000, Barb and Jerry purchased land in the Adirondacks and with the help of family built a log cabin. The cabin was close to where Barb's great grandfather camped with his wife and children in the early 1900's.
Her family will remember her as an "award winning" pie maker, an avid reader and dog lover. Mom instilled in us the importance of family, adventure and tradition. We will treasure our memories of our time with her.
Surviving is her brother; Gordon (Laurene) Puls of Canton, OH, two daughters; Sherry Mattison of Rochester, NY, Lisa (Ed) Calkin of Ashville, NY, a daughter-in-law JoAnne Denton of Maine, NY, 5 grandchildren; Kristen(Matt) Litz of Buffalo, NY, Ashley Denton of Endicott, NY, Matthew (Cheryl) Visingard of Antrum, NH, Michael Calkin of Ashville, NY, Bryan (Jen) Calkin of Vestal, NY and 8 great grandchildren: Mary and Mattison Visingard, Rogan and Collins Calkin, Nolan, Eli and Kieran Litz and Isli Denton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. (Jerry) Mattison whom she married September 1, 1956 and who died April 21, 2012 and a son, David Mattison who died in February of 2012.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm (noon) on Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Rd. Jamestown, NY 14701 or to the Lakewood Memorial Library, 12 West Summit St. Lakewood, NY 14750.
