Obituary of Lawrence H. Sorensen

Lawrence H. Sorensen, 89, of 290 East Terrace Ave. Lakewood, passed away peacefully Wednesday September 13, 2017 in his home. A Lakewood resident most of his life, he was born July 29, 1928 in Sherman, NY the son of the late Laurette Sorensen and Herb Greiner. He was a Tool and Die Maker working in Jamestown at various shops. For 34 years, he worked at Crescent Tool until they moved south in 1984. He then worked at Blackstone in the R and D Department for six years. Larry was a member of the First Covenant Church in Jamestown, the Lakewood Police Reserves, International Association of Machinists Union, and the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club. Larry enjoyed working with wood, making knick knack shelves, stools, or anything people asked him to make. Everyone he knew, had a set of toaster tongs that he had made. Larry would help anyone anytime. He had a heart of gold and because of his long eyebrows, people always remembered him. He is survived by his beloved wife Phyllis Cramer Sorensen whom he married June 1987; two daughters, Patti (Les) Kent of Frewsburg; Carol Sorensen of Jamestown; three grandchildren, Ann Marie (Antonio) Barrera of Lodi, NJ; Kellie (James) Darrigo of Portsmouth, VA; Brandon Kent of Frewsburg; 11 great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. He was preceded in death by his mother in 2005, his father and step mother, Herb and Crystal Greiner; his first wife, Marilyn Miniger Sorensen whom he married in 1948 and who died in 1984; three half brothers, Cyrus "Babe" Greiner in 1944, LeRoy Greiner in 1986, Kerry Greiner in 1987; and half sister, Edna Slagle in 2014. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday September 30, 2017 in First Covenant Church. The Rev. Adam Rohler, pastor, will officiate. Visitation will not be observed. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lakewood Fire Department, 37 JW Packard Blvd., Lakewood, NY 14750; or the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Road, Jamestown, NY 14701; or First Covenant Church, 520 Spring Street, Jamestown, NY 14701.
