Obituary of Bertha M. Shepherd

Bertha M. Shepherd, 89, formerly of 4268 Salisbury Rd. Bemus Point, passed away on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 in the Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing Facility. She was born July 19, 1928 in James City, PA, a daughter of the late Earl L. and Sara Davison Slagle, Sr. In earlier years she had worked at AVM Corp., National Worsted Mills, and also in home healthcare. She had also volunteered at the YWCA preschool. Bertha was a member of the Jamestown Free Methodist Church and the United Church of God in Buffalo. She was an avid reader, enjoyed knitting, gardening, and sewing. She will be remembered for her love for her family. Bertha is survived by a daughter Sharon (Norman) Hills; two sons: Edward (JoEllen) Shepherd and Don (Judy) Shepherd; 12 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; a sister Lillian Lamper; a step-brother Jim Slagle; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Charlie Shepherd, whom she married Jan. 15, 1945 and whom passed away Aug.5, 2014; a grandson Jacob Shepherd; a brother Earl Slagle, Jr.; and two sisters: Hazel Blauser and Ruby Woods. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017 in the Lind Funeral Home. Pastor Scott Lord will officiate. Burial will be in Fluvanna Cemetery. Friends will be received for two hours prior to the service, from 1-3 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
