Obituary of George P. Johnson

George P. Johnson, 94, of Jamestown, passed away at 10:23 pm Friday, January 26, 2018, in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. A lifelong area resident, he was born October 28, 1923 in Jamestown, NY, a son of the late Paul G. and Julia Osterstrom Johnson. George was a 1943 graduate of Jamestown High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II. Before his retirement in 1998, he operated the Johnson Barber Shop in Jamestown where he worked for 52 years. His father Paul G. Johnson started the barber shop in 1915, and he and his father worked together for over 20 years. He was currently a member of the Lakewood Baptist Church and formerly a member of the Zion Covenant Church where he was active in Sunday School, the Jr. High League and where he was confirmed in 1937. He was a 45 year member of the Jamestown Barber Association serving as Treasurer and Secretary. In earlier years he was an active member of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows belonging to both the Monitor Lodge and the former Ellicott Lodge serving as Noble Grand and Treasurer. He was also a member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy E. Smith Emmott Johnson whom he married August 4, 2001, his two sons; Robert G. (Dori) Johnson of Jamestown, Timothy P. (Laurie) Johnson of Elma, NY, two grandchildren; Kristen L. (Derek) Pollino of Jamestown, Justin R. (Angi) Johnson of Belton, TX and five great grandchildren, Jaron Pollino, Hannah Pollino both of Jamestown, T. J. Johnson, Trap Johnson and Ty Johnson all of Belton, TX. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty L. Morgan Johnson whom he married February 8, 1946 and who died September 10, 1999. The funeral will be held at 10:00 am Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Brian Rathbun, former interim pastor of Lakewood Baptist Church and Rev. Samuel Shreffler, Chaplain of Heritage Green will officiate. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 4-7 pm Thursday in the funeral home. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Lakewood Baptist Church Grace Homes, 150 Erie St. Lakewood, NY 14701.
