Obituary of Anthony L. Rainier

Anthony L. "Tony" Rainier, 93, passed away Thursday, February 15, 2018 at his home in Fluvanna, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Mary Loverme Rainier whom he married October 16, 1944 in St. James Church. A lifelong area resident, he was born September 11, 1924 in Jamestown, a son of the late Dominic and Frances Foti Rainier, and attended Jamestown schools. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the SEABEES. A professional meat cutter, Tony's original meat market was located in the former City Public Market in Brooklyn Square. Tony and Mary then owned and operated Rainier's Market on the corner of Falconer and Bowen streets for 43 years, retiring in 2007. Tony was well-known in Jamestown for the prime meats he sold to the public and local restaurants, as well as for Rainier's Italian Sausage. He was a member of Holy Apostles Parish, Ss Peter & Paul Church, War Vets Recreation and the American Legion. Tony will be remembered for his love of music, especially from the big band era. He was an avid golfer, bowler and enjoyed boating on Chautauqua Lake with family and friends. He also enjoyed ocean cruises and family trips in South Carolina and Florida. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his wife of 73 years, Mary, surviving are three daughters: Fran Rainier of Fluvanna, Roslyn and her husband, Dr. Sal Vicario of Louisville, KY, and Deborah and her husband, Stephen Kapuscinski of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren: Marissa (David) McFarland, Yvonne Vicario, Kara (Dr. Tyler) Corey, Scott Kapuscinski, Lauren (Dalton) Hart, and Adam Kapuscinski; two great-grandchildren, Ciana and Reed; and many nieces and nephews; and his brother, Carl (the late Mary Ann) Raineir of Jamestown. Tony is also preceded in death by seven sisters: Sarah Donato, Mary Conti, Carrie Sprigg, Josephine LaPlaca, Connie Farino, Grace DePasquale and Margaret St. Clair. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 20th in Holy Apostles Parish, Ss Peter & Paul Church. The Rev Dennis W. Mende will be celebrant. Entombment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Friends will be received prior to the Mass Tuesday, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Lind Funeral Home. Tony's family extends special thanks to the professional staffs of WILLCARE and Home Based Primary Care of Veterans Affairs for the care and support given to the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fluvanna Volunteer Fire Station 1, 3536 Fluvanna Ave.; Holy Apostles Parish, Ss Peter & Paul Church, 508 Cherry St.; or Chautauqua Blind Assoc., 510 W. 5th St., all Jamestown, NY 14701.
