Obituary of Phyllis Lorraine Tanner

Lorraine E. Tanner, 77, formerly of 5064 Brown Road, Bemus Point, died Thursday March 1, 2018, in Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing. An area resident since 1963, she was born February 25, 1941, in Olean, the daughter of the late Howard and Catharine Thomson English. She graduated from Bradford Area High School in 1959 and Edinboro College in 1963 with a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education. Prior to her retirement she was employed by Chautauqua County Department of Social Services as a case manager. She earlier had worked for Southwestern Central School, Levant Christian Academy and Ethan Allen. She was a member of Fluvanna Community Church and a former member of Dewittville-Hartfield and Kidder Memorial United Methodist Churches. She was a former member of Daughters of the American Revolution and served for 3 terms as president of Remocwen Club. For 11 years she and her husband were foster parents to 19 children. Her joy in life was her family, who all benefited from her love of gardening, canning, cooking/baking and needle work. Many were able to share in her love for piano as a pianist at Fluvanna Church and Ellery Baptist Church. She also enjoyed times when she was able to participate in various Missions trips. Surviving is her husband John Robert Tanner, whom she married January 26, 1963 in Bradford, PA; three children Beth (Wes) Pearson of Jamestown, Cheryl Perrin of Falconer and Mark Tanner of Greenhurst; ten grandchildren Janelle O'Brien of Rochester, NY, Darryl Pearson of Huntley, IL, Brandalyn Adams of Fluvanna, Emilee Sweatman of Ashville, Trent Sweatman and Drew Sweatman of Ellery Center, Robert Anthony Tanner of Charleston, SC, Jacob Tanner, Jonathon Perrin and Kylie Perrin of Falconer; six great grandchildren; a brother Gordon English of Batavia, NY and a foster daughter Kimberly (John) Rice of Yarnell, AZ. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter Amy Heglund. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Fluvanna Community Church. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service in the church Wednesday.
