Obituary of Allen Jackson Smith

Allen Jackson Smith, 93, formerly of 119 West Terrace Ave. Lakewood, NY passed away at 1:35 a.m. Sunday (January 24, 2010) in the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center. An area resident for most of his life he was born March 6, 1916 in Meadville, PA a son of the late Alfred A. and Katherine Scott Smith. He was a 1934 graduate of the former Lakewood High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from November 11, 1942 to September 22, 1945 during World War II. Before his retirement he was Vice President of the former Chautauqua Hardware Corporation where he worked from 1946 to 1986. He had previously served as a sales representative for the north east territory and as sales manager for Chautauqua Hardware. He was a longtime member of the Bethel Lutheran Church and was also a member of the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who loved his friends and neighbors and also loved playing with the children in the neighborhood. Surviving are his wife the former Helen Mae Carlson whom he married August 18, 1967, a son Allen Jackson Jr. of Medfield, MA, a daughter Julie Smith of Berkeley, CA, two grandchildren Allen Jackson Smith, III, Victoria Maria Smith both of Medfield, two step-son's Thomas Parkhurst of Ashville, Gregory Parkhurst of Williamsville, NY, four step-grandchildren Jennifer Hall of NC, Kim Overton of Sinclairville, Cory Parkhurst of Cleveland, OH, Jessica Parkhurst of Tampa, FL and a step-great grandson Zachary Hall. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Louis W. Smith and a sister Dorothy S. Nichols. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the Bethel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Norman R. Gauch, pastor will officiate. Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service in Gustafson Hall of Bethel Lutheran Church.
