Obituary of Lois P. Snyder

Lois P. Snyder, 91, of Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing, formerly of 41 Peterson St., died at 4:51 p.m. Saturday (June 6, 2009) in WCA Hospital. She was born in Jamestown on July 16, 1917, the daughter of the late Lewis and Anna Strum Putnam and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1935, a member of the "Orphan Class". In earlier years, Lois was employed by the City of Jamestown in various departments including the Welfare Dept., City Treasurer's office and the Mayor's office. She served as executive secretary for the city's Civil Service Commission and had worked for Chautauqua County as well. Following retirement, she later worked as an account clerk for the American Locker Group, Division of AVM Corporation, once again retiring in 1986. Lois was a devoted mother and grandmother and her favorite times were those spent with her family. When her sons would come to visit, she could be found in the kitchen for days preparing some of her special Chinese dishes and she would then invite her whole family to a Chinese feast. Another of her specialties enjoyed by all were her corn fritters. At Christmas she baked for weeks and would always entertain the family at her festively decorated home on Christmas Eve. She belonged to a local canasta club for many years and enjoyed preparing special desserts for "the club girls" when it was her turn to host them. Lois also entertained many of her friends from "the office" with her special recipes. Her special hobbies included cooking, baking and her garden, where she spent many happy hours caring for her plants. She had a great love for cats and provided a loving home for many of them through the years. She also enjoyed traveling with her family, playing board games and doing puzzles and crossword puzzles. Surviving is a daughter, Maggie (John) Scorse of Jamestown; three sons: Dr. B. Stewart "Bud" (Sandy) Snyder of Sanford, NC, Lewis (Denise) Snyder of Jamestown and Mark (Linda) Snyder of Columbia, SC; eight grandchildren: Kim (Dave) Kowalski of Jackson, MI, Troy (Mary) Moran of Jamestown, Paul (Holly) Snyder of Westfield, NY, Joshua Snyder of Mississippi, Matthew (Courtney) Snyder of Tybee Island, GA, April Snyder of Charlotte, NC, Heather Mae Snyder of Jamestown and Allyson Snyder of South Carolina; and eight great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Johnson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at SS Peter and Paul Church. The Rev. Dennis W. Mende will be celebrant. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home, where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:45 p.m. The family suggests memorials be made to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Road, Jamestown, NY 14701.
