Obituary of Rose M. Basile

Rose M. Basile of Memory Gardens and formerly of 251 Ivy Street passed away peacefully at WCA hospital on August 16 at 1:00 p.m. On April 12, 1919, Rose was born along side her twin sister Carmella (Nellie) Galati both weighing in at just under 2 lbs. In the age of limited medicine it was a miracle to survive due in large part by the round the clock care received by their parents, the late John and Madelina Luciano. Rose and Nell were inseparable. Both avid antique collectors they would spend their non-working hours canvassing local shops for that special item they just had to have for their collections. Rose worked for over 20 years with her sister Nell, at their family owned restaurant, Galati's, located on East Second Street. At the time they looked so much alike that the only way customers could tell them apart was by the letter pin each wore, "R" and "N". Prior to Galati's, Rose worked for The Art Metal Corporation during WWII as a riveter on military aircraft parts, the old Murphy's 5 and 10 cent store and Cala's restaurant. Rose graduated from Jamestown High School in 1937. Rose was loving and generous throughout her life. Her joy was seeing her grandchildren; Lindsey, Samantha and John grow up. Rose and husband Carmen would make many trips back and forth to Maryland every year to see their grandchildren. A highlight every year, was the traditional smell of Rose frying smelts on Christmas Eve. Rose is survived by her son Tom of Gaithersburg, MD; her Sister Nellie Galati, residing at Memory Gardens; three sister-in-laws: Sarah Basile Lindquist (Eric) of Springhill, FL, Lucy Basile Dominico (Nicolas) of Handford, CA and Kala Taylor Basile (Carl) of Jamestown; six nieces Madeline Galati Dye (Terrell) of Florence, SC, Lucy Ann Dominico of Hanford, CA, Margaret Lindquist Kling (John) of Springhill, Fl, and Carla Basile Sorenson (Gary), Marge Basile Johnson (Jim), Elizabeth Basile Davis (Willie), and Carolyn Basile Bennett (Lee), all of Jamestown; and three nephews, Joseph Galati (Patsy) of Alamo, CA, Tom Dominico (Linda) of Pasco, WA and Eric Lindquist (Sabina) of Salt Lake City, UT. Rose was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carmelo J. Basile on June 23, 2003, a brother Nicolas Luciano (Janice), Sister Mary Cappalino (Bucky), and nephews James Cappalino and Danny Luciano, all of Jamestown. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 19th at the Lind Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday morning at 10 a.m. at Holy Apostles Parish, St. John Catholic Church followed by burial at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. A reception will be held at 1 p.m. after the burial at Robertos at The Iron Stone, at 1516 W. 4th St, Jamestown, NY. The family expresses a special note of thanks to all the care givers of Memory Gardens who for over the past five years provided Rose with excellent and loving care each and every day. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Western New York, 2805 Wehrle Drive, Suite 6, Williamsville, NY 14221 or a charity of one's choice.
