Obituary of John C. Liuzzo

Naples, Florida resident John Carl Liuzzo was born in Jamestown, New York on November 5th, 1925, and died at the France Georgeson Hospice House in Naples on May 16th, 2016 at the age of 90 following a brief illness. The third child of Anthony R. and Antonina Liuzzo, he was a communicant of St. John Roman Catholic Church in Jamestown and after moving to Bemus Point, Our Lady of Lourdes. After his retirement, he was a member of the St. John Evangelist Catholic Church in Naples. He attended Euclid Avenue Elementary School, Washington Junior High School, and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1944. Learning to play the accordion at the age of three, young John was a musical prodigy and performed on the radio and in talent shows throughout Western New York. At the age of seven, while on vacation in Italy, he had a private recital with Prime Minister Benito Mussolini. From 1942 to 1946, John served in the United States Navy and performed with the United States Navy Band under the direction of Commander Charles Brendler, both as an accordionist and a cornetist. He performed throughout the Pacific and European Theatres and was broadcast around the world on NBC, CBS and Armed Forces Radio. During this time, he also managed to pursue his studies in Business Administration at Hobart College. After the service, John returned to Jamestown and joined his father and mother in their business, the A1 Market, the very first self-service grocery store in Southwestern New York, eventually becoming the full time owner-operator. He continued his passion for music, forming a popular dance music trio, "The Three Sharps", with local musicians including Sam Cavaretta and Jim Nazzaro. Playing at regular venues such as the dance hall at Celoron Park and Hotel Jamestown's Crystal Ballroom, he met his future wife, Lois, whom he married on November 22, 1951. After juggling the demanding hours of the grocery business, the late nights as a professional musician, and raising a young family, John decided to sell the grocery business, move his passion for music into his living room, and become a full time husband and father. He started a new career in real estate, obtaining his broker's license with Stahlman Realty. He also joined his older brother Joseph in a business venture after acquiring the intellectual property rights to a revolutionary methodology for applying precision measuring to machine equipment on factory floors. The business was Micro-Line and the application, widely accepted by businesses around the world, became an industry standard. To support Micro-Line's rapid growth, the brothers accepted an offer from Bausch and Lomb to buy the product line and stay on in executive roles with the company. After his brother's retirement, John left Bausch and Lomb to work full time at a company he had started a few years earlier, Eagle Sales Realty. He was a respected leader in the local real estate community and an active member of the Chautauqua County Board of Realtors, serving as a board member and past president. John was also a member of Moon Brook Country Club, the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks, Lodge 263, the Ira Lou Spring Post of the American Legion, and the Men's Club of Pelican Marsh. He made his own wine, Italian sausage, and, despite numerous pleas to stop, his own sauerkraut. Upon his retirement at age 65, John and Lois relocated to Naples, Florida, where he was a real estate developer, a director on the boards of two condominium associations and spent his leisure time being a proud grandfather. He remained socially and physically active playing golf and working out three times a week all the way to the very end. John Liuzzo is survived by his daughter, Rita (Tom) Buchan of Dublin, Ohio; two sons: Mark Liuzzo of Newton, Massachusetts, and Paul (Jennifer) Liuzzo of Bemus Point, New York; five grandchildren: T.J. (Allie) Buchan of Plain City, Ohio, Kevin Buchan of Columbus, Ohio, Andrea Liuzzo of Hillsboro, Oregon, Hannah Liuzzo of Boston, Massachusetts, and Anna Liuzzo of Bemus Point, New York; and a great grandson, Mason Buchan of Plain City, Ohio. John was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, the former Lois A. Munson who died on March 28, 2011; a son, John A. Liuzzo who died October 6, 1975; and a granddaughter, Marie Katherine Liuzzo who died on December 31, 1986. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Bemus Point. The Rev. Todd Remick will be celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home, where a Christian Wake Service will be led 8:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the France Georgeson Hospice House, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples Fl, 34105 or Saint Susan Center, 31 Water St., Jamestown, NY 14701 would be appreciated.
