He was born September 13, 1930 in Lowell, MA, a son of the late Leon John and Helen Brooks Avery. He was a graduate of Melrose High School, Melrose, MA, and earned two associate degrees from the University of New Hampshire and the New Hampshire Technical Institute. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from September 20, 1948 to August 28, 1952 where he served on the USS Missouri. Before his retirement, he was an inspector with Western Electric for 34 years, making his home in New Hampshire, England and New York State. He was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Lakewood, NY, and the Chautauqua Golf Club, Chautauqua , NY. He also served as Fire Commissioner with the Ashville Fire Department for several years. Charlie was known for his many interests, one of which was "fitness". Long before it was "cool", he could be seen running along the back roads of Chautauqua County. However, his main passion was the game of golf. As a computer person, he was instrumental in modernizing the operation of the Chautauqua County Men's Senior Tour with Art Asquith. He and his wife enjoyed hiking trips to the Grand Canyon, Banff National Park and the Appalachian Trail. Once retired, he became a master craftsman, designing and building many lovely pieces of furniture which could be seen throughout his home scattered among his vast collection of clocks. At the age of 86, he took up "spinning class' at the always welcoming Lakewood YMCA. He also enjoyed his lively discussions with his morning coffee friends at McDonalds. His family will remember him as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who had a great sense of humor and was well known for his one liners and his famous tractor rides. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Mary Powers Avery whom he married January 29, 1955, three children; Dr. Leon B. Avery of Waterloo, Canada, Diane Shiffer of Albion, NY, Beth (Craig) Faulkner of Jamestown, eight grandchildren; Austin (Jenny) Faulkner of Fayetteville, NC, Adam B. Faulkner of Tonawanda, NY, Avery Faulkner of Jamestown, Louisa Shiffer of Albion, NY, Amelia (Ryan) Culley of Dublin, Ireland, Millen Shiffer, Noah Shiffer, Jake Shiffer all of Albion, NY, and a great grandson; Austin C. "Charlie" Faulkner. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters; Joann Morton and an infant sister Phyllis Avery. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Timothy J. Hoyer, pastor of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Wild Rose Cemetery, Town of North Harmony. Visitation will not be observed.
