Obituary of Adelaide F. Barone

Adelaide F. Barone Adelaide Frances Thompson Barone, 91, of Jamestown, passed away at 3:24 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2018, in her home, surrounded by her loving family. "Addie" was an extraordinary woman who left an indelible mark on her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and everyone who was privileged enough to know her. She was born December 5, 1926 in the Bronx, NY, a daughter of the late Norman H. and Mildred Kreib Thompson. She attended the St. Simon Stock School in the Bronx and as a young woman had worked as a forewoman in the New York City Garment District as a fabric cutter. At that time, she was one of only two women in the country who had the physical strength and technical ability that was required to run the complicated machine called the Lawson 38. She was the devoted wife of Anthony C. Barone, MD., whom she met and married in 1952 upon his graduation from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine. They had seven children together. She often said that when she was just a young woman, she knew that her purpose in life was being a mother. Indeed, her greatest joy was in the role of mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a very loving and maternal woman, whose love and affection extended even to those that did not know her. As a young woman she volunteered after school at the New York City Foundlings Hospital run by the Sisters of Charity, where she held infants that had been abandoned on the streets of New York City. Being born in the Bronx and living next to Yankee Stadium, she was a lifelong Yankees fan who followed every televised game despite her visual impairment. She also loved watching old Hollywood movies. In her youth, she loved going to the New York City and New Jersey beaches, and her great love for the ocean and nature continued throughout her life. She loved sea shells and was an avid shell collector. She was also a devout Roman Catholic with a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. She will be remembered by her family for her unforgettable traits; her inner and outer beauty; her boundless physical and emotional strength and energy; her natural intelligence, keen memory, and sharpness of mind; boundless generosity; sense of humor and love of life; and her loving maternal nature. She is survived by and remembered with the greatest love and affection by her seven children, Andrea Fayette Barone of Jamestown, NY, Adelaide F. Barone of Buffalo, NY, Nathaniel LaDuca Barone, Esq. (Korry) of Jamestown, NY, Tina Marie Barone Anderson (John) of Las Vegas, NV, Anthony Charles Barone of Rochester, NY, Brian Eugene Barone (Concetta) of Jamestown, NY, Charles Anthony Barone of Warren, PA, 18 wonderful grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, her sister, Dorothy Blieden (Ronald) of Bellevue, Washington and her brother, Norman Thompson (Patricia) of Farnham, England. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Anthony Charles Barone, MD who died December 7, 2005. A private family memorial mass will be celebrated at the convenience of the family in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lakewood, NY. Inurnment will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation will not be observed. The family of Mrs. Barone wishes to thank the many caring and compassionate staff of UPMC Chautauqua and the staff of Chautauqua County Hospice and Palliative Care for their loving care over the past several weeks. Memorials may be made to Chautauqua County Hospice and Palliative Care, 20 West Fairmount Ave. Lakewood, NY 14750.
