Obituary of Vincent Joseph D'Angelo

Vincent Joseph "Jimmy" D'Angelo lived nearly 102 years, departing for his heavenly home on October 9, 2018 in San Antonio, TX. Known by many names: "Dad", "(great) Grandpa", "Uncle", "Husband", "Brother", "Cousin", "Mr. D", Jim D'Angelo lived his life in service to others modeling his life's creed, "you first, me second." His life story speaks a century of human history. Jim was born November 11, 1916 in Pittston, PA, to Sicilian immigrants Joseph and Anna Maria Pullizzi D'Angelo, one year following the peace agreement that ended World War I on Armistice Day. As a child, he witnessed Charles Lindbergh's early flights near Pittston, Pennsylvania. As a teenager in the Great Depression, he left home in secret on foot and hopping the boxcars of the railroad – seeking to ease his parents' burden of feeding 10 children. Taken under the wing of Father Peter Peltzer in Soccoro, New Mexico, Jim made his way to a Watsonville seminary in California where he completed high school and went on to teach there. A 20 plus year veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II, was present at the Battle of the Bulge, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War as a medic and dental assistant in a Mobile Army Service Hospital (M.A.S.H. Unit) achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. Jim married Irma Paula Haase and began his family life in California. He became involved in real estate: buying, renovating, and selling properties, making each home better than he found it. Jim, Irma, and their two children Thomas and Catherine, moved to San Antonio, Texas in the early 1960s. He continued his work in real estate, always relying on local, immigrant day laborers as a means to provide income to impoverished people and teaching the value of hard work. Jim continued his life's service to others, even participating in Habitat for Humanity following Hurricane Rita, when he was 90+ years old! Jim D'Angelo is survived by a large and loving family including his children Thomas D'Angelo and Catherine Carignan, his second wife Marion D'Angelo and her daughter Meghan Caughey, his siblings; Rose Crise, Tom D'Angelo, Mary Ann Carlo, and Pete D'Angelo, his grandchildren Kim Daneault and Julie Morelli, his great-grandchildren Sophy, Nathan, and Thomas Daneault and Seth and Mia Morelli. The D'Angelo Family, with the many related and loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended kin will miss Jimmy D'Angelo, as we are all blessed by his lifelong commitment to us all. He was preceded in death by two sisters Concetta D'Angelo Palermo Nalbone and Catherine Colera and three brothers Joseph D'Angelo, Jr, Angelo D'Angelo and Anthony D'Angelo A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday November 3, 2018, in St. James Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Friends will be received from 4-6 p.m. Friday November 2, 2018 in the Lind Funeral Home, where a Christian Wake service will be led at 5:45 p.m. Friday.
