Obituary of Joseph A. Charles

Joseph A. Charles, 86, of Jamestown, NY, passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2018, in UPMC Hamot Medical Center, Erie, PA. An area resident since 1972, he was born July 26, 1932 in Bradford, PA, a son of the late Allen J. and Marion Covley Charles. He was a 1950 graduate of St. Bernard's High School in Bradford, PA and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1959. Joseph was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from February 28, 1951 to February 23, 1955. Before his retirement he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service working as a letter carrier in the Jamestown office and was Postmaster for the Steamburg, NY office. He had also worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Jamestown and Elmira, NY and the Veterans Administration in Syracuse, NY and Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, FL. having a total of 35 years in government service. In earlier years he enjoyed nuismatics, metal detecting and geneology. He also loved sharing stories with his buddies at Fisher's Restaurant and the Celoron Legion. He was also an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the University of Cincinnati Bearcats basketball. He was a communicant of Holy Apostles Parish at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and a member of the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion and the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Donna L. Boring Charles whom he married June 22, 1957, four sons; Kirk (Laurie) Charles of Ft. Myers, FL, Craig Charles of Rochester, NY, Keith Charles of Jamestown, NY, Christopher (Leslie) Charles of Lakewood, NY, seven grandchildren; Megan A. and Jennifer L. Charles of New York, Courtney (Thomas) Reece of Cincinnati, OH, Chloe, Carly, Cooper and Cora of Lakewood, two great grandchildren; Hudson and Harper Reece of Cincinnati, and a sister; Mary T. Charles of Bradford, PA. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, John F. Charles who died in 1991. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 15, 2018, in Holy Apostles Parish at Ss. Peter& Paul Catholic Church. Rev. Dennis W. Mende, pastor will be celebrant. Inurnment will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will not be observed. Memorials may be made to the Holy Apostles Parish, 508 Cherry St. Jamestown, NY 14701, the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Rd. Jamestown, NY 14701 or to a charity of one's choice.
