Obituary of Debra J. Garifi

     Debra J. Garifi of Jamestown passed away peacefully Thursday, January 24, 2019 with family by her side at UPC Hamot, Erie following an extended illness which she faced with strength and grace.

     Born on July 6, 1958, Debbie was the daughter of Shirley and Paul Johnson Anderson. She married Nelson J. Garifi, Jr. on May 26, 1984.

     Debbie was a 1976 graduate of Chautauqua Central School where she excelled in academics and all things musical. She earned an associate degree in social science from Jamestown Community College with highest honors in 1978 and a bachelor's degree in psychology from SUNY Fredonia with honors in 1980.

     A lifelong member of the Camp Street United Methodist Church, Debbie gave generously of her time and talents to support the church as a choir member, Sunday School teacher, Bible School director, youth group leader, and member of many committees and boards. She was also an active volunteer for the JCC Alumni Association for several decades.

     Among Debbie's many gifts were her beautiful singing voice, her artistic ability which she particularly shared with young children, and her gift of warm, supportive friendship which she extended to many.

     Debbie was employed for many years at Sears in the Chautauqua Mall and also at the St. James Pre-School and JCC Campus Children's Center. The role she cherished most of all was that of loving mother to her son, Colton.

     Debbie is survived by her husband of 34 years, Nelson of Jamestown; their son, Colton of Mount Morris, NY; and her sister, Pamela K. Anderson of Jamestown as well as numerous dear cousins and friends.

     She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Shirley Anderson, who passed in 2011. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 29, at the Camp Street United Methodist Church, 110 Sanford Drive, Jamestown.

     The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 28 at the Lind Funeral Home.

     Memorials may be made to the Phyllis Kraemer Nursing Scholarship Fund or the JCC Alumni Fund or the JCC Global Scholarships fund, all c/o the JCC Foundation.
