Obituary of Bruce S. Scolton

Bruce S. Scolton, 70, of Panama, NY, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at the Heritage Park Rehab & Skilled Nursing facility following treatment of an unexpected illness. He was born December 22, 1948 in Jamestown, NY, a son of the late Harold and Ruth Rowlands Scolton. Bruce was a graduate of Panama Central School where he excelled in both academics and athletics. He completed his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth College in 1971. Upon graduation he enrolled and actively served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1973. He was honorably discharged in 1977 after completing his Reserve obligation. Bruce earned his law degree from Duke University School of Law in 1976. He was admitted into the New York State Bar Association in 1977 and in 1984, the U.S. District Court Western District of New York. Bruce was a distinguished attorney that dedicated his career to providing outstanding legal representation to his clients as a partner in the law firm of Erickson Webb Scolton & Hajdu where he practiced for more than 40 years. He also served his community as the long-standing Town of Harmony Justice and was a member of the Jamestown, New York State, and American Bar Associations. Athletics were an important part of Bruce's life. He was a proud supporter of the Panama Central School athletic department as an assistant coach, scout, and long-time booster. When he wasn't on the field or court he could be seen and heard in the stands. He also applied his passion and knowledge of the game of basketball as a referee for many years as a member of Board 39 IAABO Basketball Officials. During his free time, Bruce enjoyed reading and golfing with his friends, family and colleagues. He enjoyed nature, never missing an opportunity to be outdoors hiking, hunting, and bird watching. Most importantly, Bruce took every opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren, who he was extremely proud of, attending their various athletic and musical activities. Surviving are his daughter, Krista L. (Stephen) Odell and son, Eric R. (Jennifer) Scolton, both of Panama, NY; four grandchildren, Natalie Odell, Lillian Odell, Danielle Scolton, and Jackson Scolton, all of Panama,NY; a brother, Hugh (Gail) Scolton of Rochester, NY; and a sister, Peggy Hinson of Jamestown, NY; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Along with his parents, Bruce was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joanne Harriger Scolton whom he married on February 19, 1971 and who passed on November 12, 2013. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 1 at 11:00 a.m. at the Panama United Methodist Church. Pastor Steven Taylor will officiate. Burial will take place immediately following in the Panama Union Cemetery. Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30 at the Lind Funeral Home.
