Obituary of Carol E. Cadwell

Carol Ecklund Cadwell, 92, of Lakewood, NY passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at UPMC Chautauqua. She was the daughter of the late Evelyn C. and Clarence N. Ecklund, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Sherwood (Sherry) Staples Cadwell. Carol was a graduate of Jamestown High School, earned a BA from Wells College and attended the Katharine Gibbs School in New York City. She was then employed by Bankers Trust in New York before returning to Jamestown to marry Sherry Cadwell in 1956. Carol and Sherry moved to Lakewood in 1964 where they raised their three daughters, Carrie Cadwell Brown (David) of New Boston, NH, Susan Cadwell Upton (William) of Ann Arbor MI, and Jane Sherwood Cadwell, Exeter NH. Carol was always active in her community, and among her contributions were service on the WCA Hospital Board, a member of The CRECHE and Clerk of the First Presbyterian Church Session. A vociferous reader and a great golfer and tennis player for many years, Carol retained her love of sports and competition, which later in her life led to her almost always completing the Sunday NY Times crossword puzzle before the rest of the family. Carol will be remembered for her understated and hilarious sense of humor, her humble and never wavering good sportsmanship throughout her life and her devotion to and love for her husband, daughters and her three grandsons, Charles Trowbridge Upton (Elana), Thompson Cadwell Upton (Constance) and Henry Eaton Upton, and great-grandson, Elijah Staples Upton. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 3rd in Bellinger Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, led by the Rev. Robert J. Hagel. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, in fellowship hall of the church. Memorial gifts may be made to UPMC Chautauqua WCA, P.O. Box 840, Jamestown, NY 14701; The Lakewood Memorial Library, 12 W. Summit St., Lakewood, NY 14750; or to a charity of one's choice.
