Obituary of Donald P. Filegar

Donald Paul Filegar, 76, of Gerry, NY, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at UPMC Chautauqua - WCA Hospital, Jamestown, NY. A Gerry area resident for most of his life, he was born September 19, 1942 in Jamestown, a son of the late Forrest Monroe and Alice Hause Filegar. Don was a 1960 graduate of the former Bemus Point High School. He was a member of the Jamestown Free Methodist Church, where he was very active for many years, and also served multiple terms as a trustee of the Cattaraugus Christian Family Camp. Before his retirement in 2016, Don had been co-owner, with his brother Richard (who retired previously) and Jack Twinam, in the operation of Filegar Saw & Tool Company, Inc -- a company his late father, Forrest, started and where he worked from a young age. Don will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many, and he will be forever missed in their hearts. A longtime Yankees and Steelers fan, Don enjoyed bowling, visiting family, and doing all kinds of repair work at home, at church, and at camp; however, most of all, he loved playing/teasing/joking with his family and kids of all ages. Whether at church, camp, or just the grocery store, Don was always drawn to babies to bring them a smile, which he always did. For all these things and so much more he will be greatly missed. Surviving him are his wife of 32 years, Sharon N. Filegar, whom he married on March 14, 1987; four daughters: Linda Filegar (Jamestown, NY), Carol Schwenk (Erie, PA), Nancy Filegar (Jerome, ID), and Mindy Glotz (Sugar Grove, PA); three step-sons: Scott Auch (Fraser, MI), Shawn Auch (Holley, NY), and Trent Auch (Gerry, NY); fourteen grandchildren: Carrie, Ashley, Jonathan, Justin, Tyler, Zach, Matthew, William, Alex, Devin, Soren, Sophie, Mikaela, and Marek; ten great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Fritton (Lakewood, NY). Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Robert and Richard Filegar. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 7, in the Lind Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 8, in the Jamestown Free Methodist Church, with visitation for one hour prior to the service, from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday at church. The Rev. Dodi McIntyre will officiate. A private family committal service will take place in Lake View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jamestown Free Methodist Church, 515 East 7th Street, Jamestown, NY 14701, www.jamestownfmc.org.
