Obituary of Donald W. Cederquist

Donald W. Cederquist, 89, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday July 31, 2019 in his home. A lifelong Jamestown resident, he was born August 31, 1929 the youngest of eight children to the late Carl and Natalie Dahlgren Cederquist. Donald was a graduate of Jamestown High School and went to work at Sears Roebuck. He joined the US Navy January 22, 1952 serving onboard the USS Cronin during the Korean War until his discharge November 24, 1953. Returning to Jamestown, he went to work at Canteen Vending Service as a Route Salesman and Manager for many years. He subsequently retired from Hydro Fumigating. Donald was an active member of Zion Covenant Church, Thule Lodge, and the Vikings. He was an avid bowler and played saxophone, leading his own band. He loved to joke and possessed a quick wit. He was a man who had a smile on his face and who could put a smile on your face. Donald was proud of his family and was devoted to his wife. He also loved woodworking and left a legacy of toys, toy chests, bookshelves, step stools, and children's table sets for his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Joyce Seagren Cederquist; two daughters: Suzanne (Jim) Purpura of Jamestown; Sandy (Mike) Lathem of Easley, SC; five grandchildren: Arik (Kim) Purpura of Charlotte, NC, Andrew (Kelly) Purpura of Sharpsburg, GA, Lauren (Matt) Reaves of Fountain Inn, SC, Allison (Andrew) McLaren of Ranlo, NC, Megan (Drew) Gentry of Oahu, HI; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his seven siblings, Pearl, Jane, Doris, Alice, Kenneth, Charles, and Norman. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel S. Soderberg will officiate. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service Saturday in the funeral home. Burial with full Military Honors will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zion Covenant Church, 520 Fairmount Ave. WE, Jamestown, NY 14701; or Roswell Park, PO Box 631, Buffalo, NY 14240.
