Obituary of Gary L. DuBois

Gary L. DuBois, 78, of West Oak Hill Rd. Jamestown, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, September 20, 2019, at UPMC Chautauqua. A lifelong area resident, he was born November 14, 1940, in Jamestown, NY, a son of the late Lewis E. and Florence M. Dodge DuBois. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Sandra K. Okerlund DuBois whom he married December 22, 1962, two children, his daughter, Danielle K. DuBois of Jamestown, his son, Derek C. (Lisa Lombardo) DuBois of Jamestown, and his grandsons, Domenic A. DuBois and Anthony J. Galtieri. He is also survived by a sister, Jeannine DuBois Punch of Covington, LA and her children, Steven Brocklehurst of Woodbridge,CT and Cathy Flemington of New Orleans, LA. He was a 1958 graduate of Jamestown High School and earned both his bachelor's and master's degree in education from the State University of New York at Fredonia. Before his retirement in 1998, he was an educator for the Cassadaga Valley Central School System retiring after 30 years of teaching history and working for New York State. He began his teaching career working for the Silver Creek Central School System for several years. He was an active member of the former First Baptist Church of Jamestown for over 50 years and was currently attending the Lakewood United Methodist Church where he was enjoying his new and caring church family. A true sports enthusiast, Gary enjoyed and participated in a variety of sports. He enjoyed shooting skeet and trap with his many friends and his son Derek. He was a lifetime member of the Celoron Rod & Gun Club and currently was an active member of the Pine Grove Gun Club. During his time at Cassadaga Valley Central School Gary was the girls varsity basketball coach and girls softball coach. Gary very much enjoyed being a representative to Section 6 for girls high school basketball. He later became a basketball referee and took his daughter Danielle to many of his games. Gary's accomplishments were varied and many and will not be forgotten Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a memorial service to be held following visitation from 4:30 to 6:30 pm Thursday, September 26, 2019, in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Michael Childs, pastor or the Lakewood United Methodist Church will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Rd. Jamestown, NY 14701, the Lakewood United Methodist Church, 164 Shadyside Ave. Lakewood, NY 14750 or to the Falconer Public Library, 101 West Main St. Falconer, NY 14733.
