Obituary of Richard S. Sampson

Richard S. "Suzzy" Sampson, 86, of Greenhurst, NY, passed away on Thursday evening, August 20, 2020, in UPMC Hamot Medical Center, Erie, PA. A lifelong area resident, he was born January 11, 1934 in Jamestown, NY, a son of the late Oril S. "Orie" and Mary M. Sperry Sampson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from July 16, 1956 to May 1, 1958. Following his discharge he served in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1962. Before his retirement years he was an accountant for several area businesses including Weaver Materials, Inc. In later years he was a bus driver for the Chautauqua Area Regional Transit System for several years. Dick was a life member of the Fluvanna Fire Department, where he served as treasurer for many years and was a former member of several local veterans' organizations. A furnace of ambition, Richard was always looking to occupy his time with a household chore or project. When he wasn't fixing or tinkering, he could be found enjoying the finer things in life, such as his morning doughnut or the latest episode of Jeopardy. Richard was an all around swell guy, and was always willing to share his wisdom with others. He will be deeply missed. Surviving are his wife Deloros D. "Peachy" Briggs Sampson, a daughter; Lisa Sampson of Greenhurst, a son; Derek Sampson of Myrtle Beach, SC, four grandchildren; Dan Shea, Alicia Shea, Xander Sampson, Xava Sampson and one great grandson, Conner Nelson. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Orice Conn. A private memorial service with military honors will be held in the Lind Funeral Home. Friends will be received from 12:00 – 2:00 pm Tuesday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Fluvanna Fire Department, 3536 Fluvanna Ave. Ext. Jamestown, NY 14701.
