Obituary of Jerome C. Ernewein

Jerome C. "Jerry" Ernewein, 81, of Mayville, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020 in UPMC Chautauqua. He was born on June 10, 1939 in Jamestown, son of the late Jerome A. and Elaine V. Walsh Ernewein. Jerry was a 1957 graduate of Jamestown High School. He was a veteran of the US Air Force serving from 1958-1963 in Morocco, Germany, and Rome, NY. He graduated from Jamestown Community College and the FBI National Academy. Jerry was appointed deputy sheriff with the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department in 1963 and rose through the ranks to acting Sheriff in 1994. He was appointed Undersheriff after former Sheriff Joseph Gerace was elected until his retirement in 2002. He was an exempt member of the Chautauqua Volunteer Fire Department. Jerry is survived by his wife, Sally Laughlin Ernewein, whom he married Sept. 3, 1960; a son Matthew (Christiana Theodosiadou) Ernewein of Tewksbury, MA; a daughter Kristen Ernewein of Jamestown; a grandson Kyle Ernewein of Tewksbury, MA; and nieces and a nephew. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Jacqueline Brooks and Barbara Azcuenaga A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020 in Holy Cross Cemetery, Jamestown. The Rev. Dennis W. Mende, pastor of Holy Apostles Parish, Ss. Peter & Paul Church, will officiate. Social distancing guidelines will apply. The family would like to thank Dr. Brautigam, Dr. Sapple, the staff of the 4th floor at UPMC Chautauqua and the Chautauqua Volunteer Fire Dept., for their compassionate care. The family also wishes to thank their neighbors and friends for their generosity and thoughtfulness.
