Obituary of Francis J. Moynihan

Francis J. "Sonny" Moynihan, Jr., 90, of 2683 South Avenue, formerly of Frewsburg, passed away peacefully Saturday November 21, 2020, in his home surrounded by his entire loving family and under the compassionate care of Chautauqua Hospice and Palliative Care. A lifelong area resident, he was born September 11, 1930, in Jamestown, a son of the late Francis and Frances Johnson Moynihan. He was a 1951 graduate of Jamestown High School and served in the US Air Force from 1951-57. Prior to his retirement in 1997, he was employed by MRC/SKF Bearings and Blackstone Corporation as a millwright. At both employments he was an active union representative. Following retirement he was a bus driver for the YWCA's childcare and TEAM programs for many years. He was a current member of the board directors for the MRC/Affinity One Federal Credit Union serving since 1989. He was also a member of Samuel Derby Post 556 American Legion. Throughout his life he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, sailing with two sons on Chautauqua Lake as well as being the number 1 fan of his son's race team at Stateline Speedway. Sonny was always a people person. He spent his lifetime rooting for the New York Yankees. Surviving are his wife Carolyn Jackson Moynihan, whom he married May 25, 1963; two sons Francis "Casey" (Pat) Moynihan III of Lakewood and Steven "Bear" (Gena) Moynihan of Jamestown; grandchildren Christina (Marvin) Anderson, Heather (Rodney) Anderson and Shawn (Michelle) Abbey all of Ashville, Amanda Bower of Middletown, MD and Lacy (SSG Butch) Ferrara of Tower City, PA; great grandchildren Sasha, Cody, Johnathon, Gavin, Wyatt, Josh, Trenton, Vinnie, Leo, Odin and Val; six great great grandchildren; sister Barbara Gallagher of Lincoln Park, NJ and nieces and nephews Martha (Bill) Holt, Kathy McGill, Bonnie McGurn, Paula Schneider, Patrick Moynihan and Margaret Arthur. Sonny had many friends along the way from work and life who he shared his life with and great conversation . Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Berkley Moynihan, brother in law Edward Gallagher, nephew Matthew McGilll and niece Jennifer Moynihan. The funeral will be live streamed at 2 p.m. Wednesday at www.facebook.com/lindfuneralhomeinc/ Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. A walk through visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. Face masks must be worn and social distancing observed while inside the funeral home.
