Obituary of Phyllis S. Craig

Phyllis S. Craig, 88, of Jamestown, NY, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2021, at UPMC Chautauqua, after a brief illness. She was born on June 7, 1933 in Mayville, NY, the youngest of three children, of the late Henry J. and Lucile Weise Stroebel. She attended Chautauqua Central School, graduating in 1951. On April 13, 1952 she married Peter N. Craig, who died in 2016. She was also preceded in death by her sister Lois Sandeen; and brother Ronald Stroebel. Phyllis is survived by her caregiver-daughter Debra Craig of Jamestown; sons Steven (Donna) Craig of Norwich, NY and Scott Craig of Nashville, TN; grandsons Eli Craig and Matthew Craig of Loveland, CO; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to being a loving mother and homemaker, Phyllis worked outside the home, including a long tenure at Marlin-Rockwell Corp. Phyllis always took an interest in young people, beginning in the late 1950s when she and her husband led a church youth group in Holley, NY where they lived while Mr. Craig attended college. Later she was a Sunday school teacher at Brooklyn Heights Methodist Church in Jamestown; a volunteer leader with the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts; and a lifelong friend to Brian Johnson, Lynn Sizemore, and other children in her Tew Street neighborhood. Over the years Phyllis enjoyed many pursuits and activities, including sewing, antiques, decorating, holiday crafts, picnics and fireworks at the family cabin, and attending concerts, plays, and other performances in Jamestown, Chautauqua, and Lakeland, FL where she and her husband spent winters in their retirement years. The family will arrange for a private memorial at a later date.
