Obituary of Betty L. Kelly

Betty L. Kelly, 94, of 175 Aldren Ave. Jamestown, NY, and Bradenton, FL, passed away on Sunday, December 26, 2021, in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. An area resident for most of her life, she was born May 5, 1927, in Sarasota, FL, a daughter of the late Godfrey J. and Agnes Yungquist Carlson. Betty was a 1945 graduate of Jamestown High School and graduated from the Swedish Covenant Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, IL. In earlier years she had worked for the former Jamestown Telephone Corporation for several years. Betty was a longtime active member of the First Covenant Church where she served on the deacon board, was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the church choir, a member of the Covenant Women and served on the Great Lakes Conference Board. She was also an associate member of the TE Covenant Church in Bradenton, FL where she also served on the board. As an active member of the civic community, she was a 50-year member of the Mozart Club, was a volunteer at WCA Hospital and a member of the WCA Auxiliary. She was an honorary member of the Green Thumb Garden Club, the New York State 8th District Garden Club, honorary member and past president of the Norden Women's Club, a member of the American Scandinavian Heritage Foundation, the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and the Peterson Society, was a co-chairman of the United Way Retiree's, a charter member of the Juliet Rosch Society, was very active in activities at the Lutheran Home and served on the resident council, and served as a Chautauqua County Election Inspector for many years. Betty had a special interest in Camp Mission Meadows and Chautauqua Institution and supported them generously over the years. Surviving is a son, Robert D. (Dorine) Kelly of Lexington, KY, several cousins including, Karin Flynn of Lakewood, NY, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Kelly whom she married September 6, 1947, and who died December 1, 2003, and a brother, Elwood Robert Carlson. A celebration of Betty's life will be held in the spring of 2022 at First Covenant Church, details to be announced by the Lind Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery.
