Obituary of Cosmo M. DeMaio

Cosmo M. DeMaio, 91, of 101 Avalon Blvd., Jamestown died early Wednesday morning, April 6, 2022 at Heritage Park Rehab & Skilled Nursing. A Jamestown native, he was born February 20, 1931 to the late Frank and Mary Oleandi DeMaio. Cosmo was a 1949 graduate of Jamestown High School where he served as reunion chairman for several years. He joined the National Guard in 1949, serving until 1958, and was a member of the Jamestown Area Jaycees. His employment began with six years at the former Maddox Table Co. He then went into sales in positions with Fuller Brush, Weston Biscuits, Sears, and the former Jamestown Distributing Co. Cosmo then spent 33 ½ years with MRC/SKF, retiring in 1995 as a machinist. Following retirement, he spent four years with K-Mart followed by fourteen years at Home Depot, retiring again at the age of 86. Cosmo took one art class at Jamestown Community College and became a portrait artist. He also had the ability to construct wood furniture, making many pieces for his family. He was also involved with the Lakewood Odds and Ends 4H Club teaching art and woodworking in the late 1970s and early '80s. A member of Busti Church of God, Cosmo belonged to the UAW Local 338 and Jamestown Sertoma Club serving as president for several years. He was a board member of the Chautauqua Children's Safety Education Village where he conducted many auctions to benefit the village, having been active since the Village's inception. Cosmo is survived by his wife, Ethel Yasher DeMaio whom he married July 22, 1950; two children: Robert (Jenny) DeMaio of Lakewood and Susan (George) Witruke of Busti; four grandsons: Michael (Brooke) and Benjamin DeMaio, both of Columbus, IN, and Ezekiel and Cosmo Witurke, both of Jamestown; and seven great grandchildren: Jonathan, Kendall, Atticus and Mila DeMaio of Columbus, and Kayla, Stella and Maxx Witruke of Busti. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Hayes who died in 2003. A private family service will be held. Visitation will not be observed. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Busti Church of God, 996 Forest Ave., Jamestown, NY 14701.
