Obituary of Lyla L. Bowen

Lyla Lindsey Bowen, 104, of 106 Williams Street, died Wednesday, May 25, 2022 in her home. She was born April 4, 1918 in Cory, Pa., a daughter of the late Claude R. and Alice Armstrong Lindsey. In Lyla's early years, the family moved to Jamestown where she attended Jamestown schools, graduating in 1936 from Lakewood High School. Lyla was the widow of Albert W. Bowen whom she married September 23, 1939 and who died May 21, 1977. She was employed for 40 years as a bookkeeper by the former Bank of Jamestown which later became Bankers Trust Co. of WNY. She became head bookkeeper and retired as Assistant Vice President. Lyla and her late husband lived in Lakewood for many years and were members of Lakewood United Methodist Church where she continued her membership. She was also a member of the Lakewood Memorial Post 1286 American Legion Auxiliary, her eligibility a result of her husband's service in Europe during World War II. Lyla was an avid bridge player and a longtime member of the Lakewood Bridge Club and later the Bridge-o-rama Bridge Club in Jamestown. She enjoyed reading and read many fiction and nonfiction books over her lifetime. She also loved to travel and visited many countries in Europe, camping on one trip in a minivan with her husband, sister and brother-in-law. Over the years she visited many state capitols and museums, in addition to exploring most of the National Parks in the western United States and Canada. Lyla is survived by her son, Alan Bowen (Vickie) of Jamestown; three grandchildren: Jason Bowen of Panama (Kelly Bowen of Jamestown), Andy Bowen of Jamestown, and Ann DeLeon (Elliot) of Jamestown; and six great grandchildren: Taylor Bowen, Madalyn Bowen, Gavin Bowen, Eligh DeLeon, Ellie DeLeon, and Lyla DeLeon. Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters: Mildred Peterson, Opal Nash, Audrey Derby, and Lois VanStee. A private family service will be held. Visitation will not be observed. Inurnment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Rd., Jamestown, NY 14701; or to a charity of choice.
