Obituary of John A. Dimitri

John A. Dimitri, 79, of 19 Hillcrest Drive in Fredonia, NY, passed away Monday, May 1, 2023 in Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, NY, surrounded by his family. His passing followed a courageous battle with cancer. John was born May 26, 1943, in Olean, NY, a son of the late Themistocles "James" and Antigone "Helen" Petro Dimitri. James owned Dimitri's Confectionary for 39 years in Olean. Upon the death of his father in 1955, John and his family relocated to Jamestown, NY. He was a 1961 graduate of Jamestown High School and earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Fredonia State University in 1973. He served in the U.S. Army from 1971-75 during the Vietnam War, stationed in South Korea. John was a chemist by training and worked for The Wine Group/Mogen David Wine Corporation for more than 30 years in Westfield, NY. At the time of his retirement in 2010, he was the Vice President of Wine Making and Cellar Operations. Following his retirement, he continued working as a consultant. In addition to his successful and fulfilling career, John had a great love for his church, the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Jamestown, NY, where he served in years past as church council member and treasurer. He was also a member of the American Legion and American Chemical Society. John was an avid fan of the Buffalo Bills and the New York Yankees, had a voracious sweet tooth, and was the center of many family gatherings. He would never turn down a fresh donut (or any sweet), saying chocolate was "in his blood." He was also known for his special recipe for Texas Hots that he loved to cook for family and friends. John was devoted to his family and the love of his life, his wife Julianne. He was proud to share in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren—attending countless concerts, dance recitals and sports events. Surviving is his wife, Julianne (Lopriore) Dimitri, whom he married March 20, 1982; three sons, Adam John (Kelly) Dimitri of Fredonia, NY, Aaron Michael (Mackenzie) Dimitri of Jersey City, NJ and Alexander James Dimitri of Philadelphia, PA; five grandchildren, Adrianna Athena, Audrey Antigone, Alexandra Aeron, Theo John, and Piper Joyce Dimitri; two brothers, James (Karin) Dimitri of Salem, CT and L. Michael (JoAnn) Dimitri of Fredonia, NY as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins of the extended Petro family. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Athena B. Dimitri, of Jamestown, NY, in 2022. The funeral will be held Saturday, May 6th at 1pm at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Jamestown, NY. The Rev. Soterios Rousakis will officiate. Interment will be at Veteran's Grove in Lake View Cemetery. Friends and family will be received from 4-6 pm Friday, May 5th at St. Nicholas, with a Trisagion Prayer Service immediately following. Memorials may be made to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Mt. Vernon Place, Jamestown, NY 14701, P.O. Box 264. You may leave words of condolence at www.lindfuneralhome.com.
