Obituary of Jane A. Winter

Jane A. Winter, 64, of 215 Forest Avenue, died Monday July 20, 2015, at UPMC Hamot in Erie, PA. She was born August 28, 1950 in Jamestown, NY to Joanna Traynor Winter and the late Paul Winter. Jane spent her childhood in Bemus Point, NY while her parents and relatives operated the Traynor Winter Restaurant. She was a graduate of Maple Grove High School, Jamestown Community College, Oswego State University and received a Master's in Education from Fredonia State University. Jane was employed by the Jamestown Public School System for 33 years, retiring as a reading specialist. Active throughout the community and committed to civic involvement, Jane was a member of Christ First United Methodist Church, Marvin Community House, Jamestown Interclub Council, YWCA, Joint Neighborhood Project, Chautauqua County Humane Society Feline Action Committee, Jamestown Teachers' Association, Fenton Historical Society, Jamestown Audubon Society, Delta Kappa Gamma International Honor Society of Women Educators, National Education Association, Philanthropic Educational Organization, Green Thumb Garden Club, and the Chautauqua Council International Reading Association. She was involved with WJTN Radio as moderator for High School Bowl, volunteer for the Young Reader's Radio Quiz and had supplied Thoughts for the Day read on The Weather Outside since 2005. Jane received multiple community recognitions throughout the years; the most recent being named Jamestown Interclub Council's Woman of the Year 2011 and accepting the Women in Leadership Award 2013 from Zonta of Jamestown. A proud 28-year breast cancer survivor and 1-year survivor of heart disease, she was known for her resilience, optimism, and willingness to counsel others going through health difficulties. Surviving besides her mother, Joanna Traynor Winter of Jamestown, is a daughter, Jessica (Paul) Woodin, of Frederick, MD. She was preceded in death by her father. Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Lind Funeral Home, 805 W 3rd Street, Jamestown, NY. A celebration of her life will take place Saturday at Christ First United Methodist Church, 663 Lakeview Ave, Jamestown, NY led by Rev Natalie Hanson at 10 a.m. Some of Jane's favorite music will be performed prior to the service at approximately 9:30 a.m. Internment will be in Bemus Point Cemetery.
