Obituary of Neal R. Sandberg

Neal R. Sandberg, 87, formerly of Jamestown, died July 31, 2015 in Sarasota, Fla. He was born September 4, 1927 in Jamestown, the son of the late Martin Arnold and Ellen Hanson Sandberg, and was a graduate of Jamestown High School. Neal served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II and participated in the Navy's operation CROSSROADS, testing nuclear weapons at Bikini Atoll Islands in the Pacific Ocean. These veterans later became known as "Atomic Veterans". Neal then attended the State University of New York obtaining a degree in Management. His career in retail management lead him to managing retail stores in New York and Ohio. For most of his career, Neal was the store manager for many of the now famous "Woolworth Department" stores. Neal was the husband of the late Doris Mae Decker Sandberg, with whom he had three children. Following the death of his second wife, Mary Lou Cline Sandberg, Neal moved to Sarasota, Fla. in 2003 to be near his daughter, Debra. He is survived by his three children: daughter Dr. Debra Sandberg and her husband, Dr. Michael Lindquist of Sarasota; daughter Dana Sandberg Vargo and her husband, Dr. Frank Vargo of N. Royalton, OH and their children Sarah and Paul Vargo; and son Scott Sandberg of Strongsville, OH and his children Carl Sandberg and Amanda Sandberg Davis. Also surviving is his children's stepsister, Janise Bayne and her husband, David Bayne along with their children, Jarrett, Daniel and Stephanie Bayne. Neal was a greatly loved father and grandfather. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 15th in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald E. Ray will officiate. Friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service in the funeral home Saturday. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery next to Neal's parents and many other members of the Sandberg family.
