Obituary of Francis LaVerne Card

Francis LaVerne "Vern" Card, 90, of Lakewood passed away Wednesday November 4, 2015 in his home. He was born April 11, 1925 in Busti, NY the son of the late Cecil A. and Mabelle Gunton Card Sr. Vern attended the former Lakewood High School and during WWII served as a Sergeant with the US Army Company H 150th Infantry Division in the Panama Canal Zone. For over 30 years, he was a truck driver with Lyons Transportation Lines retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 649 and a former member of the Moose Lodge. Vern was a life member of the Mayville American Legion Post 493 and a life member and past commander of the Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post 8647 VFW in Mayville. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working on his small farm. Surviving are his son, Bradley L. (Mary Kay) Card and grandson, Corey B. Card all of Lakewood; two sisters, Doris E. Clark of Holiday, FL and Janice M. Camp of Stockton, NY. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of over 65 years, Mary L. Jones Card whom he married October 12, 1946 and who died July 2, 2012; three brothers, Cecil A. Card Jr., Charles Card, and Lawrence Card; and two sisters, Mildred Smith and Louella M. Nolan. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. His niece and godchild, Pamela Peterson will officiate. Burial will be in Busti Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and for one hour prior to the service Monday in the funeral home. The Lake Chautauqua Memorial Post 8647 VFW will conduct a memorial service at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
