Obituary of Donald L. Carlson

Donald L. Carlson, 80, of 3205 Young St. Jamestown, passed away Thursday, December 17, 2015, in the Select Specialty Hospital, Erie, PA. A lifelong area resident, he was born May 23, 1935 in Jamestown, NY a son of the late Yngve and Margaret Kreutz Carlson. Don was a 1954 graduate of Jamestown High School. Before his retirement in 1998, he was employed by the Bemus Point Central School System for over 30 years, retiring as the Superintendent of Building and Grounds. In earlier years he also worked with his family at the former Starlite Restaurant. He was the first President of the Chautauqua Superintendent of Building and Grounds Association and served on the Board of Directors for the New York State Superintendent of Building and Grounds Association. He was a longtime active member of the Fluvanna Fire Department since 1967, serving many positions including, Emergency Medical Technician, Assistant Chief and was Fire Chief from 1976-1977. He was also Fire Police Captain and served on the board of Fire Commissioners for 28 years, retiring from there in 2010. He was a member of the Thule Lodge 127, VASA Order of America and during his high school years was a member of the Viking Lodge Drum and Bugle Corp. In recent years he had attended the Ellery Senior Citizens Group activities. Surviving are two daughters, Debra Carlson, Deanna Carlson both of Bemus Point, NY, three sons, Scott Carlson of Bemus Point, David Carlson of Escondido, CA, Todd Carlson of Jamestown, five grandchildren, Ashlee Smith of Charlotte, NC, Khara Smith of Xenia, OH, Shannon Carlson of Escondido, CA, Adrianna Rojas of Mt. Pleasant, PA, David Rojas of Wattsburg, PA, six great grandchildren, Kamare, Kionte, Trenton, Kaci, Kylee, Christian, two step-sisters, Bonnie Rappole of Jamestown, Cheryl Shagla of Bemus Point. Besides his parents, Yngve and Margaret Carlson, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra Scott Carlson, a sister, Janice Carlson Rich, his step-father George Carlson and his step-mother Margaret Carlson. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Friends will be received from 5-7 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home.
