Obituary of Joyce E. Sanders

Joyce E. (Nohlquist) Sanders, 82 of Jamestown, passed away early Friday morning, January 22, 2016 at the Lutheran Home & Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness. She was born May 8, 1933 in Jamestown, NY, the youngest child of the late Harold and Theodora Mosshammer. Joyce is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Russ Sanders, to whom she will always be eternally grateful for his dedication to her comfort and care. Joyce was raised on Chautauqua Lake in Point Stockholm, along with her surviving sisters, Margaret Olson of Jamestown, Joanne Berg of Lakewood and Sylvia Ecker of Sarasota, FL. As a child, she loved to ice skate in the winters and swim the summers away along the beautiful shores of her beloved Lake. In 1950, Joyce married the late Donald Nohlquist of Jamestown, and had fou well-loved children who survive: a son, James Nohlquist of Geneseo, NY, daughter Jacqueline Vincent (Skip) of Jamestown, daughter Joanne Zahn (Bill) of Truckee, CA, and daughter Jan Streed (Darryl) of Ashville, NY. She was a beloved grandmother to Matthew Johnson, Leigh Anne Cepeda, Joshua Adams, Denise Nohlquist, and Danielle Bongiovanni, as well as "Grandma GG" to Alyssa & Lauren Cepeda, Celeste Nohlquist and Rocco Bongiovanni. She also leaves her much loved stepson, Doug Sanders and his wife, Marlene. She will additionally be missed by her beloved cat, Sophie. Later in life, Joyce would return to her beloved lake and married her long-time love, Russ Sanders, in 1994. They enjoyed beautiful sunsets, lakeside evening gatherings, fireflies, a warming fire and much laughter. Their dock was always open for friends to drop in for a chat or for an impromptu boat ride, which was her passion. Their home was a safe haven for family and friends. Joyce retired from the Jamestown Fire Department after serving many years as the secretary to the Fire Chief. She was an accomplished, avid bowler for many years and currently a member of two senior bowling leagues at Jamestown Bowling Company. She cherished the friendships with her fellow league bowlers and enjoyed her role as the league's Secretary. She was an Auxiliary member of the Herman Kent American Legion Post 777 in Celoron for several years, and enjoyed many long-term friendships with her fellow members. She so loved her Legion "Happy Hours" with "the girls"! As a matriarch, Joyce lived an amazing life, taking on many roles and she was always surrounded by the ones she loved. She would often comment, "My biggest life's accomplishments are my children". As a single parent, Joyce had the challenging task of raising her four children, to whom she taught integrity, honesty, humor, compassion and independence. Her children will be forever grateful for her guidance and support, and the impact she had on their lives. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 30th in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Gregory Streed will officiate. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 12 noon until 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Assoc., P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220.
