Obituary of Douglas A. Nelson

Douglas A. Nelson, 55, of 4483 West Fairmount Ave., died unexpectedly Thursday, March 3, 2016 in his home. He was born January 22, 1961 in Jamestown, a son of Edwin N. and Bonnie Costlow Nelson, Jr. of Ashville. Doug had been employed for over 30 years by Quality Markets. A third generation firefighter, he was an advanced EMT with the Chautauqua County Ambulance Service for many years, receiving much of his training, as well as recognition and awards. Doug was a 12 year member of the Lakewood Fire Department and also the Maple Springs Fire Dept. He formerly belonged to the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club and Sons of the American Legion in Lakewood. Doug enjoyed fishing, hunting and boating. He was always helping others. In addition to his parents of Ashville, surviving are three daughters, Ashley Nelson of Jamestown, and Miranda and Marisa Nelson, both of Ellery; two grandchildren, Gabriella and Joseph Armeli; two sisters, Laura (Todd) Gilbert and Tracy Emerson, both of Lakewood; and two brothers, Edwin N. (Julie) Nelson III of Ashville and James B. (Kim) Nelson of Lakewood. He's also survived by seven nephews & five nieces, several great-nieces and nephews, and several aunts and uncles. Doug was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Edwin and Katherine Nelson; and maternal grandparents, Robert and Hazel Costlow. The funeral will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. Peter Dawson, Fire Service Chaplain, will officiate. Friends will be received for two hours prior to the service, from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Lakewood Fire Dept., 20 W. Summit St., Lakewood, NY 14750.
