Obituary of Verna M. Piazza

Verna M. Piazza, 83, of 107 Willard St. Jamestown, passed away at 10:30 pm Wednesday, June 15, 2016, in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. A lifelong area resident, she was born May 21, 1933 in Jamestown, NY, a daughter of the late Michael and Minnie Catanese Licals. Verna will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt who loved to spend time with her family. She was well known for her excellent baking, her love for playing bingo and for her trips to the casino. Surviving are her three children, Carla (Mark) Stringer, William (Sherry) Piazza, Margaret "Peggy" Piazza all of Jamestown, 10 grandchildren, Kelly (Rob) Roth, Michele (John) Schnars, Angela (Chris) Backus, Scott (Justine) Piazza, William L. (Stephanie) Piazza, Joseph R. (Samantha) Piazza, Michael A. Piazza, Jr., Victoria (Alex) Hester, Anthony Piazza, Carla Piazza, 16 great grandchildren, two sisters, Edna Liden, Virginia (James) McKotch both of Jamestown. Among several surviving nieces and nephews are her God child Diane "DeeDee" Liden as well as Donna Warner and Donald Liden. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Victor J. Piazza whom she married November 3, 1951 and who died November 18, 1985, a son Michael A. Piazza who died January 26, 2010 and a granddaughter Gabrielle D. Piazza who died March 6, 2015. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Monday in St. James Catholic Church. The Rev. Darrell G. Duffy, pastor will be celebrant. Inurnment will be in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Friends will be received from 5-7 pm Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be led at 6:45 pm Sunday.
