Obituary of Virginia C. Smith

Virginia C. Smith, 95, formerly of Frewsburg and 9 Crane St., Jamestown, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2017, surrounded by family, at the home of her son in Hampton, VA. She had lived in Virginia since 2010. She was born August 29, 1921 in Jamestown, a daughter of the late Fred and Mattie Englewood Crossley, and attended Jamestown schools. Virginia worked as a waitress for several area restaurants over the years, including the former Johnson's Bakery, Benders Pancake House and Twin Kiss Drive-In. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where she belonged to the Bishop Overs Guild and volunteered at the Thrift Shop. Virginia is survived by her daughter, Sherryn (John) Martin of Youngsville, PA; two sons: Frank (Deborah) Smith of Asheboro, NC and Todd (Jane) Smith of Hampton, VA, with whom she made her home. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Gary (Nancy) Martin, Dennis (Colleen) Martin, John Martin, Jr., Mandy (Michael) Smith, Danielle (Ben) Harbor, Aaric Smith and Cassondra Smith; a step-grandson, Paul (Debra) Slagle; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; a brother, Robert (Patricia) Crossley; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank E. Smith, whom she married August 3, 1940 and who died April 8, 1984; two infant sons; a sister, Margaret Whitford; and three brothers, Fred, Charles and Don Crossley. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Luke F. Fodor will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home.
