Obituary of Daniel J. O'Brien

Daniel J. O'Brien, 93, of Jamestown, passed away Monday, January 22, 2024 in his home surrounded by family. He was the husband of the late Frances "Franny" Jeanette Freay O'Brien whom he married July 30, 1955 in Sacred Heart Church in Lakewood, by Rev. Kenneth Mullen. Dan was born October 17, 1930 in the family home in Ashville, NY, the son of the late Daniel C. and Josephine Brigget Brennan O'Brien. He attended Ashville schools and served in the US Navy from 1949 to 1953 in total. For 40 years Dan was employed by the former Jamestown Telephone Co. as an installer. He was a member of the War Vets Recreation and Frewsburg American Legion, as well as the Morning Maniacs at the JCC Rec Center. Along with the family cat, Billy James, surviving are four sons: Michael (Gayle) O'Brien, Thomas (Shari) O'Brien, Christopher (Julie) O'Brien and John (Kolene) O'Brien; ten grandchildren: Sara (Nick) Cowling, Hannah (Ian) O'Donnell, Claudia (Jordan) Weingrad, Levi (Deandra) O'Brien, Ashton (Hayley) O'Brien, Cordell O'Brien, Jenna O'Brien, Daniel O'Brien, Sean O'Brien, and Kylie O'Brien; ten great-grandchildren: Nora, Clare, Elliott, Emry, Aleena, Cullen, Kane, Kaden, Michael, and Flynn Daniel; a sister, Eileen Rensel; and sisters-in-law, Kathryn Coleman, Shirley Stockwell, and Onnalee Freay. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Colleen Marie; brother, James O'Brien; and sister, MaryJoe McGraw. Dan's family would like to thank Andrea Waddington (VNA) and South County Hospice for the extraordinary end-of-life care they provided. There will be no visitation or funeral service.
