Obituary of Ellen H. Morgenstern

Ellen H. Morgenstern, 95, formerly of 3 Lakeview Ave., Lakewood, died Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the Lakeside Beikirch Care Center in Brockport, NY. She was born July 15, 1914 in Ithaca, NY, a daughter of the late Professor Grant and Ann Ottaway Hopkins and graduated from Ithaca High School. Ellen graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Cornell University where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and was also a graduate of the Washington School for Secretaries in Washington, DC. In earlier years, she had been employed as a secretary for Coca Cola of Pittsburgh and was later secretary to the vice president of CBS in New York City, the Department of Navy in Washington during World War II and the State Legislator Connie Cook's office in Ithaca. She had also taught at the Washington School for Secretaries. In later years, Ellen served as office secretary for her late husband, Dr. Robert P. Morgenstern in Jamestown. A member of Lakewood United Methodist Church where she had been librarian and was active in the Bible Study Group, Ellen also belonged to the Fortnightly Group and Lakewood Women's Club. Surviving are two daughters, Ann Lee Walker of Brockport and Carolyn Coppedge (Sam) of Richmond, VA; two stepsons, Bill Morgenstern (Jeanne) of Jamestown and Brent Morgenstern (Michele) of Watertown, NY; six grandchildren: Jennifer Ellen Coppedge, Grant Coppedge, Debra Liddell, Rodney Morgenstern, Amy Morgenstern and Emily Morgenstern; sister-in-law Ann Dibble (Paul) of West Ellicott; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John A. Walker and second husband, Dr. Robert P. Morgenstern; and a brother, Stephen Hopkins and sister, Florence Hopkins. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Lakewood United Methodist Church. The Rev. Violet A. Davidson will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home. Ellen's family is deeply grateful for the loving and compassionate care of the 3rd floor staff of the Lakeside Beikirch Care Center in Brockport for the past three years.
