Obituary of Genevieve T. Buckley

Genevieve "Jean" Turner Buckley, 92, of 41 North Butts Ave., W.E. passed away at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday (September 28, 2010) in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. An area resident for most of her life, returning to Jamestown in 1946 from Philadelphia, she was born February 19, 1918 in Jamestown, NY a daughter of the late Lelander "Lee" S. and Cyrene Clarinda "Rhena" Markham Turner. She was a 1936 graduate of Jamestown High School and graduated from the Babies' Hospital of Philadelphia in 1937. Jean was a longtime communicant of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lakewood and active with the Altar and Rosary Society of Sacred Heart, serving as a Past President. She also served as a Past Grand Regent, State District Deputy and Recording Secretary of Court St. Gertrude # 92 Catholic Daughters of the Americas, having been a loyal member for 62 years. She was a past member of the YWCA, the Antique Study Club, the Fenton Historical Society and the Celoron Senior Citizens. In earlier years she had been employed by the former Plaid Land and the Top Value Redemption Store. She was also an antique dealer in the Jamestown area for 12 years, having enjoyed friendships with other dealers and antique shows. For many years she took great pride in her vegetable gardens, having spent each summer canning, freezing and sharing with her friends. She will be remembered for her ongoing donations of hand knit hats, mittens, craft items and handmade quilts to charitable organizations with in the community and throughout the United States. She will also be remembered for her great sense of humor and vibrant personality, always putting others ahead of herself. She was also an avid bowler in previous years. Surviving are two daughters JoAnn (Timothy) Silk of West Ellicott, Valerie Adams of Jamestown, three grandchildren Jammie Adams of Jamestown, Jillian and Kristen Silk both of Orlando, FL and a great grandson Jacob Adams. She was preceded in death by her husband Peter C. Buckley whom she married February 4, 1946 at Our Mother of Good Council in Bryn Mawr, PA and who died March 28, 1967 and also by two brothers Louis L. Turner who died in October of 1985, Porter M. Turner who died in January of 2000. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lakewood. The Rev. Joseph M. Dowdell, pastor will be celebrant. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be led by Msgr. Dowdell at 1:45 p.m. Thursday and a Catholic Daughters of America Wake Service will be led at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
