Obituary of Doris M. Mullen

Mrs. Doris M. Mullen, 91, of 3354 Old Fluvanna Road, Jamestown, passed peacefully into the next life Monday, October 18th, 2010 at WCA Hospital with two of her grandchildren at her side. She was born December 29, 1918 in Jamestown to the late Martin and Emily Kendall Munson. Doris was a graduate of Jamestown High School and Jamestown Business College and retired from the Jamestown Post Journal Circulation Department. A member of First Lutheran Church, Doris also worked with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Ellery Senior Citizens, and the Chatauqua Board of Electors. Doris had an incredibly active life and had a real gift for developing lifelong friendships. As a younger mother, she was a Girl Scout Leader and developed a passion for swimming. Doris and her late husband Bud, were active members of the Kinzua Valley Region Chapter of the Antique Automobile Association of America in which they enjoyed collecting, restoring and showing their vintage Thunderbirds. Upon retirement, she and a group of her friends started a swimming club that met weekday mornings at the JCC pool and have continued to this day as a Monday afternoon luncheon group. Doris was a talented piano and organ musician and had a great love for all types of music, especially Big Band. She attended many local musical performances, was an avid reader, and spent many hours volunteering and supporting the Fluvanna Free, Bemus Point, And James Prendergast Libraries. She is survived by two children, a daughter Patricia Cobb and husband Bruce, a son Peter Mullen and wife Ann, both of Jamestown; four grandchildren Steven M. Cobb, Jamestown, Jeffrey A. Cobb, Amherst, Martin T. Mullen and wife Laura, Brunswick, OH, and Donna S. Gerakos and husband Anthony, Goodyear, AZ; four great grandchildren Mary, Grace, and Ruby Mullen, and Jacob Gerakos;several nieces and nephews and nephews including Muriel Boyd, Erie, PA with whom she was especially close. In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death on May 12th, 1985 by her husband Francis P. "Bud" Mullen whom she married on July 5th, 1940, and a brother Thomas Munson. A funeral will be held Thursday, October 21st at the Lind Funeral Home with Rev. Alan W. Anderson officiating the 11:00am service. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Jamestown. Family and friends will be received at the funeral home from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 pm Wednesday, October 20th.
