Obituary of John E. Alpaugh

John E. "Jack" Alpaugh, 86, of Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing died at 8:19 p.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at the facility. He was the husband of Lucy Lindner Alpaugh whom he married October 23, 1948. Jack was born in Mercerville, NJ on October 18, 1924, one of twelve children of the late Clifford J. and Ida Lee Higgins Alpaugh and graduated from Hamilton High School in Trenton, NJ in 1942. He served in the US Marines from 1943 to 1945, with duty as an anti-aircraft gunner aboard the USS Langley in the Pacific during World War II. Jackgraduated from Rider College in Trenton, NJ in 1948. After moving to Jamestown in 1954, he was employed by Chautauqua Chemicals for 30 years, retiring as vice president in 1983. Jack moved to Columbia, SC where he was co-owner of Mid-Carolina Supply for 10 years, retiring again in 1994. He returned to Jamestown in 2006. Locally, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America administration, Easter Seals and Little Theatre of Jamestown where he served as president. Jack was also president of the homeowner's associations of both Wildwood Townhomes and Hulon Greene while in Columbia and was an avid lifelong tennis player. In addition to his wife of Gerry, NY, surviving are four sons: Andrew (Cynthia) Alpaugh and Mark (Maryann) Alpaugh, both of Jamestown and Clifford (Kim) Alpaugh and John P. Alpaugh, both of Columbia, SC; ten grandchildren: Geoffrey (Dorsey) DeLong of Atlanta, GA, Rebecca (Andrew) Fields, David (Krista) DeLong and Eric (Angela) DeLong, all of Columbia, Joshua (Carrie) Alpaugh, Jeremiah (Melissa) Alpaugh and Marissa (Michael) Hamilton, all of Springfield, VA, Martha Alpaugh of Burlington, VT, Jennifer Alpaugh of Columbia and Mitchell Alpaugh of Jamestown; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth DeLong who died in 1994, as well as seven brothers and four sisters. Memorial prayers will be said at 4:00 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home, led by Pastor Samuel Shreffler of Heritage Village. Inurnment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia, SC. Friends will be received for two hours prior to the prayers, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the funeral home Saturday. In lieu of flowers. the family suggests memorials be made to Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing, 4570 Route 60, Gerry, NY 14740.
